If there were justice in this world, the NYT would've created a cartoon best seller list long ago. If it existed, Tom Tomorrow's work would occupy the first five slots with "Too Much Crazy" resting on top. However, justice, along with truth and logic remains captive on the far cultural horizon. That why the NYT non fiction best seller list consists primarily of the best fiction publishers can buy.As John Lennon once said "everything is the opposite of what you believe." This brings us to Tom Tomorrow's work captured in the latest collection of "This Modern World ". Although his weekly strips are immensely rewarding, one can only truly appreciate his genius when you have the luxury to absorb a complete collection. In this case, the period covered is 2008-10. The world and national events prove to be a steamy brew for Tom Tomorrow's comic cauldron. Not since, Al Capp (before he started getting weird in the late sixties) has there been an artist that, through words and images, captures the absurdity of society and the corruption of human nature in such a biting and humorous manner.
"Too Much Crazy" continues to demonstrate how diligent Tom Tomorrow is at honing his craft and extracting the priceless value of measured timing and highly defined characters. A quote from John Updike, referring to another cartoonist, can be readily applied to Tom Tomorrow's work, "it has fire in its belly and a brain in its head ".
If you'll indulge me, I have no doubt that if Tom Tomorrow's work had existed, it would have been Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia's first choice during his cartoon radio crusade, to read and describe it to the listening public during the 1945 great NYC paper strike. History will always recall the Mayor's poignant rhetorical question during this disgraceful period, "Why should the people suffer? " Indeed!
Do yourself a favor, buy this book and start or continue to be a "This Modern World" traveler. For no other reason but to ensure the author maintains his artistic integrity and no long is forced to accept commercial largesse through rock band sponsorship. It's up to you dear reader, to keep Tom restricted to his studio churning out future work and not forced to subsidize his existence through conscription to extended rock concert tours.

I got this to challenge my conservative views. Tomorrow is definitely libel, i knew that before i purchased the book. I liked it; he does cut both ways.
Tom Tomorrow is a certified genius, both in his artwork and his dialog. In this book, he's captured the essential insanity of extreme right wing Americans. These are not reasonable, thoughtful conservatives in the mold of William F. Buckley or the young George Will. By now, it's crystal-clear that ultra-right-wing ideology is driven by the wealthy and powerful in order to maintain and advance their position in society. The trouble is that, in whipping up groups like the Tea Party, they've created a monster beyond their control.
Tomorrow manages to illuminate this craziness, while keeping it in a humorous way that helps maintain the sanity of progressives and intellectual conservatives, despite one of the most serious onslaughts against small-d democracy in the history of our nation since the days of "Tailgunner Joe" McCarthy [...].
If we survive this assault, and reject oligarchy and plutocracy the way we rejected McCarthyism, it will be in no small measure to satirists like Tom Tomorrow, who were able to penetrate the fog of class warfare and bring us to realize the higher angels of our nature.
Signore Perkins (aka Tom tomorrow) seems to be the perfect answer for those with all their time taken by the relentless grind of the jobbe, as life in the USA spirals toward the fall of empire. An intellectual shortcut to awareness cleverly disguised as a humor cartune book! Too many use "too busy" as excuse for , as the Dragnet man used to say, (get) "JUST THE FACTS's ma'am....."
These wonderfully drawn cartunes feature, in each installment, more useful information, common sense and reveal the horrors of the current "situation" in this crazylouco "land of the free to work 12hrs + per day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year" than any daily news journal, or 30 minute "news broadcast".
And so it should.
As each day reveals more and more USians are acting/voting/protesting against their own vital interest, as well as the generations to come, Mr. Tom somehow makes us laugh out loud at how ridiculous "we" are to continue either "pulling the wool over our own eyes", or allowing others to do such.
His non parrtisan approach should not be overlooked, as he reveals the hypocracy/silliness from both sides of the US- two sided coin.
As the great "filosofer" George Clinton (Funkadelic, damas y caballeros!) once exhorted...
"THINK! It aint ILLEGAL yet!"
Mr Perkins' wonderful cartune book should be a delightful aid for those who are all for pursuing that cause!
Hat's off Tom Tomorrow, for continuing to remind us we need act "today" for a better "some day", no?
100000000000 estrelas no ceu!
Big fun as always, and a nice touchstone to assist in remembering the supremo absurdo that is being perpetrated upon a docile and sleeping nation.
(tho the recent protestations in Wisconsin may indicate the alarm clock is ringing, and we must fight the urge to press the "off" button and fall back to the golden slumbers...)
Have you ever come across Our Modern World, perhaps in an alternative city newspaper like the Anchorage Press? If you are intelligent, well-read, read at least one newspaper, vote, love humor that has wit and bite, know what irony means, and lean to the left, buy this.
