I didn't know the book existed until I saw the trailer for the movie. I'm a German native (expat), so naturally I get many of the references as well as the style of language: You really feel as though the story was told by someone from the middle of the 20th century.

The book takes to prisoners: Everybody and everyone gets their share of criticism and ridicule, from the neo-Nazis to the Greens and Social Democrats. The underlying question of the book is, "Could it happen again?" - which it answers in the affirmative.

The style is a dry, witty humor, on a foundation of a solid knowledge of the history of the Third Reich and the philosophy driving its Führer. At times, you laugh with Hitler about the follies of modern-day society, other times you hold your breath because of the casual application of the most humanity-denying worldview that probably exists. Wouldn't you know, abortion is bad because without it, we could have had four or five more tank divisions to send into battle in the next war.

Creative and fascinating to read. There are many references to events, ideas and personalities during the Third Reich which enhance the text and probably would go unappreciated if the reader were not familiar with that period in time. The book is great for history buffs as well as today’s readers. A preposterous event suddenly seems more possible.
Best Satire I've read in a long time. It looks like it's about Nazis and Hitler, but it's about Germany. Ruthless and hilarious critique of modern German culture, society and especially politics. Adolf Hitler completely skewers the modern neo-nazi movement. The Bier Garden scene is roll-on-the-floor funny (c.f. Ausschnitt). Very sophisticated language. It pushed my vocabulary for sure.
I am still in the beginning of this thick book. The writing is satirical and complex. While the book is written mostly for entertainment and its dark humor, one one would get more out of the book with some knowledge of the history and the political jargon, names, titles and abbreviations associated with the Nazi regime. It is not easy reading for today's generation and the average student of German. I compared a few pages with the English translation "Look Who's Back". It passes over some of the finer satirical details and idiosyncrasies of the Nazi regime. Footnotes and a glossary would be helpful in both language editions.
This book has been a world-wide hit--read it in English or any of the dozens of languages it's been translated to. It helps greatly if you know the history of Germany in the 1930's-40's, because there are so many references to AH's rise to power, the Third Reich, & WW2. Hitler is back, thrown through time into 2011, a year that he loves for some things (like the internet) & hates for others (a FEMALE Chancellor of Germany!!). (The Germans have made a film of this book (premiered 4/16) & the trailers look great.) One of the German reviewers of this book said it was hilarious in some parts, & very unsettling in others. That sums it up well.
He's Back is less light-hearted than I expected, more dark humor, more thought-provoking but still hilarious in parts. Still, one laughs in spite of oneself rather than because one wants to do so. The complete lack of comprehension on the part of young people who can see Hitler only as a persona, a performance gag, a master at putting on a media show, is juxtaposed to Hitler's initial ignorance of contemporary technologies like the Internet and Facebook. He, however, quickly learns how he can manipulate these new media for his goals. It's just that few believe that he means what he says. Chillingly, in times of globalization, amorphous angst everywhere, scapegoat-hunting becomes a reality, even if the re-birth of Hitler remains a metaphor. An interesting book. There is humor and satire here, even a bit of science-fiction. After all, how does Hitler find himself in the middle of an open field in Berlin, reeking of gasoline, in the summer of 2011? The author offers no explanation, but follows the main character, speaking in the first person throughout, as he begins a new political campaign. Using his own name, he's considered a comedian, even as he espouses his old ideology. Hitler quickly learns the new media and becomes something of a gadfly on the internet and in the newspapers. But he also has a more or less positive effect on people around him.

I started to read this book during a stay in Germany during the summer of 2013, and got about three-quarters of the way through it before leaving. I bought it in order to finish it. I believe that it was #2 or #3 on the German bestseller list. As far as I know, there is no English-language version of the book, so this is for those who can read German. I recommend it as an interesting example of modern German literature.
I really enjoyed this book, but it is not for everyone many people would find a darkly comic social criticism wherein Hitler wakes up in Berlin in 2011 and is mistaken for a satirical method actor to be a bit, er, tough to get into. It was surreal to be reading this during the lead-up to the 2016 elections in the U.S. Anyway, the German version is hilarious as some of the puns couldn't work in English. Also, the author has a knack for capturing the syntax of how Hitler spoke -- uncanny and weirdly comical at the same time. As entertained as I was, the other non-Hitler characters are pretty flat and stereotypical, but if Hitler had to deal with TV producers, I suspect he'd see them as unidimensional so maybe the characterizations are spot on given the vantage point of the protagonist.
